At midnight on New YearÕs Eve, the S.S. Poseidon is struck by a 90 ft. tidal wave and is capsized. The Reverend Frank Scott (Gene Hackman) leads nine survivors through steam, fire, and rising water in the upside-down ship to reach the bottom, now the top. This was the first of the disaster film craze of the 1970s, but few were as well done or as popular as this movie. Winning the Academy Award for Best Song, it was also nominated in seven other categories, including Shelley Winters for Best Supporting Actress and Harold E. Stine for Best Cinematography.
