Description: PREPARING FOR THE BATH (J.W. Godward, 1900) Godward's painting is set in a tepidarium of a Roman bathhouse and may have been inspired by Alma-Tadema's 1899 work Thermae Antoniniae. The arched recesses are where bathers placed their clothes and personal effects, each divided by a figure of Atlas. A lion sculpture supports a table based upon examples of excavations, on which sits an ornate ivory casket. The model is thought to have been Ethel Warwick, a professional who posed for other artists and who took to the stage in the same year of the painting.Print size 12" x 6". www.scenica.co.ukMember of the pre-Raphaelite society
