Protea cynaroides is a tropical or tender perennial in the Protaceae family. Its native range is in south Cape Providence. Familiar names include Giant Protea, King Protea, Honeypot, or King Sugar Bush. It is called a sugarbush because so many birds come to feed on the nectar. Bees and beetles also visit it. It is the national flower of South Africa and the flagship of the Protea Atlas Project. It makes an excellent cut flower because it lasts a long time in a vase. It can grow to 6 feet tall but is usually around 2-4 feet tall from a taproot. A woody-stemmed shrub with very thick stems and leaves that are dark green and glossy. The flowers are cream to pink to a deep crimson color with several color variations. It produces 5-10 flower heads on one plant. Once established, it prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little water needs. Zones 8-11 Germination Plant your seeds in a seed starting tray with ample bottom drainage and a transparent cover. Plant 2” apart and 1” deep in a 50/50 mix of river sand and coco peat, with a soil pH of 5-6. You'll want to maintain 72-85°F during the day and avoid freezing temps at night. Germination in 2-3 months.
