While it is big and burly, it is remarkably lightweight for its size. And with its huge fins, it is very stable; and that makes it a model that you can predict what it will do every time you launch it. This is what I'd term as a perfect "demonstration" rocket. Imagine you are asked by a group of students or scouts to put on a rocket demonstration. You want something big and impressive, but that can still fly on cheap black powder propellant motors so that you won't deflate your wallet launching it. This rocket is exactly the type of thing you're looking for. It takes mid-power size motors, so it will thunder into the air every time you launch it. And because it is so stable, you'll know that it will go where you want, and not zigzag all across the sky and land somewhere that you'd classify as out-of-bounds. The rocket is built to take mid power engines, such as 29mm diameter F20-7 motors. And on that engine, it will scream skyward and impress even the most stodgy onlookers. And because it is so lightweight, it can use smaller 24mm diameter motors, like the Estes D12 or even the C11-3. That is a great thing to consider if your budget for rocket motors is limited. A cool feature of this kit is that it comes with a motor adapter so you can use those 24mm motors! With the two sizes of motors, this kit can use a wide variety of engines. You probably already have some motors in your range box that can be used in this rocket. That means that if you get a last-second call to perform a rocket demonstration, this rocket is ready and able to answer the call to duty. The Big Dog is one of the first mid-power kits from Quest and has a couple of nice features. First is a nylon cloth parachute. This is much more durable than a chute made from plastic. It is also pre-assembled, so you don't have to do anything but attach it to the rocket. You'll find that this rocket also sports a thicker tube than you'd find on normal model rocket kits. That gives it some durability to handle the higher flight loads from bigger motors. What is the downside of this rocket? That's a smart question to ask. The big flaw (but fixable), is that the kit does not have a retention method to hold in 29mm motors, nor the 24mm adapter assembly. To fix it, we recommend a motor retainer, such as the one from Aero Pack. That will hold the motor securely in place during flight without having to wrap tape around it to friction fit it into the tube. The other thing we noticed is that the 24mm motor adapter can only be used with standard length motors that are 2.75 inches long (like the Estes D12, C11 or the Aerotech E15, E20, or E30). To use the longer 3.75-inch motors, like the Estes E9 or the Aerotech F32, you will have to completely replace it. If you already have a 24-to-29mm motor adapter in your range box, then you're probably all set anyway. Finally, we wished that this kit had through-the-wall fins, instead of just attaching to the surface like you'd find with smaller rockets. Through-the-wall would have really make the fins much stronger. Because of this, we highly recommend using heavy-duty fillets made out of the epoxy clay. That would be just as good anyway. Why is this Kit a Skill Level 3? The Quest Big Dog is a very straightforward build. It comes with a plastic nose cone, surface mount die-cut balsa fins and parachute recovery. The primary reason this is a Skill Level 3 rocket is that it is designed for bigger motors. While this doesn't make assembly any more difficult, it requires an extra level of maturity to handle the bigger motors. You have to know when conditions are unsafe where you should not use the bigger motors. Most younger children just want to shove the biggest, baddest motor into rocket whenever they want. This could be a safety issue, so big motors are usually recommended for people with more experience in rocketry. Second, this kit does not contain an engine hook for 29mm motors, so you'll need to have a bit of extra skill when securing the engine for flight. Please see our education page for more information on holding motors in big rockets. Another option (not necessarily required) is that you can order the Aero Pack Engine Retainers. These are useful on rockets that use the 29mm diameter reloadable motors and really give the model a professional appearance. And yes, they can be installed on existing rocket kits like this rocket kit.
