Because I could not open the book and check details, some items that follow are from a combination of a 1961 copy and other sources. The 1961 copy Flyleaf says, "complete, documented, authoritative account of railroad logging in all of its ramifications, amply illustrated with 440 photos of outstanding clarity and detail. It is a record of an era that can never come again". The Introduction states, "The era of the logging railroad was synonymous with the great era of logging. Each was dependent on the other. The versatility of the railroad made it possible to tap the most inaccessible tract of timber with high production equipment and methods. Only the railroads could carry away the logs as fast as the loggers could supply them. The logging railroad was a thing apart. Beyond making use of a locomotive to haul cars with flanged wheels along steel rails it bore little resemblance to the common conception of railroading. It was a highly specialized operation requiring specially developed equipment; and it was manned by a special breed of men... The logging railroad was made up of light rail tacked to flimsy ties and laid on scanty ballast... The logging railroad was the outstanding characteristic of the great days of logging". The Table of Contents (unchanged) shows a division by equipment. The book also has a four page Glossary and a seven page Index. The copyright date, ISBN and inside front cover are from other sources. Every page beyond the section headings in the 1961 edition contains one or more photographs. The pictures show the actual front and back of the 1995 shrink-wrapped dust jacket, the Table of Contents and the inside front cover. Ebay collects sales tax for some states. The collection includes the world famous SP 4449 Daylight locomotive, originally restored to pull the American Freedom Train in 1975-76. The magnificent SP&S 700 is also an operational 4-8-4 which came back to life in 1990. They are joined by their little sister, the OR&N 197, a Pacific 4-6-2 which will steam up again in about 1 year. All three are located at the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center, a working engine house with a turntable, allowing public access to the locomotives.
