KEYWORDS: Kalervo Rankama, Precambrian, Geologic Systems, Volume 1, Eras, Geology, Geoscience, DESCRIPTION: From the Preface: Since the introduction of dating methods based on radioactive decay, an increasing amount of reliable age data on minerals and rocks has accumulated, especially during the past decade. Two intervals of geologic time are now outstanding in the availability of a very notable number of exact ages, viz., the Precambrian and the Quaternary. The possibilities offered by the existence of reliable ages are now making world-wide correlations within the two systems definitely possible, and it appears that in the near future geologists will make increasing use of ages for the stratigraphic division and world-wide correlation of the other systems as well. The past decade also yielded convincing evidence of a greatly increasing interest in Precambrian geology in many parts of the world. The interest, witnessed by the great increase in the flow of Precambrian literature, is natural because the Precambrian time covers almost 90% of the total length of time that has passed since the formation of the Earth, and by far the greatest part of the geologic history of the Earth as well. Even for a Precambrian geologist, however, it is sometimes still a very hard task to realize the formidable length of Precambrian time and the profound importance of the processes molding the Earth's crust during the Precambrian. A Precambrian geologist will reasonably expect that the study of his particular field of interest would be greatly facilitated, even on a worldwide basis, by the availability of condensed, authoritative, and up-to-date descriptions of the Precambrian geology of the various parts of the world... ********* Includes black-and-white illustrations and fold-out map.
