RAOUL DUFY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 03/18/1952 - HFSID 272996 RAOUL DUFY Letter from the French painter thanking art collector Charles Zadok Typed Letter signed: "Raoul Dufy", in blue ink, 1p, 8x10. Paris, 1952 March 18. To Gimbel's executive and art collector Charles Zadok. To “Dear friend Zadok”. In French, translated in full: “Squaring my communication about your letter of March the 8th, proposing your Mozart for the Biennale in Venice. I am very touched and I thank you for your proposition. I may be running short on time for this letter now. But if you would like, I will hold onto your proposition for the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris next year./ I hope that you as well as Madame Zadok are in good health and I wait for your news or your visit soon. A thousand kind regards”. Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), whose life and art were greatly influenced by music, used orchestral themes as early as 1902. He painted Hommage Mozart in 1915. In 1952, the year of this letter, Dufy painted Hommage Debussy, another in his series, and he won the prize for painting at the 26th Venice Biennale. Versatile French painter, muralist and graphic artist initially influenced by the Impressionists, Dufy later added his own flair to the fauve style. His luminous, exuberant watercolors include scenes of sailing and other outdoor amusements as well as flowers, musical instruments and nudes. Charles Zadok, who died in 2006 at the age of 87, had gone to Paris in 1929 to manage the buying office of Gimbel-Saks. Zadok, who became a prominent art collector, was a charter member of the Museum of Modern Art's International Council and the Robert Lehman Art Foundation and Trust, supervising the installation of the Lehman art collection in the Metropolitan Museum following Lehman's death. In 1953, the year after this letter and the year of Dufy's death, Zadok, as head of the Gimbel store in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened Gimbel's first suburban department store. From 1956 until his retirement in the 1970s, Zadok was Vice President of Expansion for Gimbel Brothers. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the "R" of Raoul, horizontal fold touches the descenders of the "fy" in Dufy. Lower left blank corner chipped away. Otherwise, fine condition.
