Description: This is an Estate Fresh old Coin or Sterling Silver ladle from the late 1700's, from a fine home up in Santa Fe NM. This gem is a big 13" Soup or Serving Ladle, straight line measure, longer if one followed the curves. It is in outstanding condition with no damage, just normal signs of wear from a piece as old as this one is. One can only make out the top of the touch mark on the handle, looks like the top of a T and an N, pretty sure on that, and that is the mark of Thomas Northcote of London, or maybe Norton of back in New England, but due to the 4 Hallmark touches , this is probably certainly from London best I can tell. The other marks I cannot decipher, though you can see the back leg of a lion in the 2nd mark which is the silver mark, and the back of the Bust used for the Duty mark in the 4th hallmark, they are pictured best I could. I think the 3rd mark is the side of the Lion Face, which is the mark for London. The best part of this piece is that great Clam Shell bowl, with a really good heavy rat-tail on the back side of it. The handle is beaded all the way around to the bowl on both sides. It also has an interesting Etched mark at the top of the handle, like an extended arm holding an Olive Branch or something similar ( if anyone recognizes that, would love to know what it is.) Its just really good work and a nice heavy piece at 187.6g. Hard to find these early ones any more. TN - Thomas Northcote, London Thomas Northcote was a Celebrated specialist Spoon , Utensil and Fork maker and was apprenticed to Charles Hutton between 1766 and 1771. He entered his first mark (TN) on 20th August 1776 following five years in the workshops of Thomas Chawner. For a brief period in the mid-1790's he worked in partnership with George Bourne (TN/GB) making Plates, before once again working on his own account. He is particularly noted for the fine quality forks that bear his mark and was probably a specialist in this craft (forks were more difficult to make than spoons). He died in 1798 aged forty nine leaving his widow, Hannah, to continue the business.
