Description: You are bidding on a rare antiquarian hardcover book titled A Voyage In The Sunbeam - Our Home On The Ocean For Eleven Months. By Mrs. Brassey. Profusely Illustrated. Published by John Wurtele Lovell, 1881. This is an extremely early American Edition of this landmark work. The Appendix includes a Summary of the Entire Voyage Compiled From the Log-Book. The Brasseys, Lord and Lady Thomas Brassey, together with their children and some friends, and a complete complement of crew, made several voyages to different parts of the world. Lady Brassey kept a journal of the travels and published three books about them which became immensely popular. Unfortunately, during the voyage to Australia Lady Brassey contracted malaria and died at only 48 years old. The last book contains a touching tribute to her by Lord Brassey, who also contributed to the last part of narrative of the journey after Lady Brassey’s death. The ‘Sunbeam’ was a 190 foot three-masted top-sail composite schooner built in 1874. She participated in the trans Atlantic race in 1905 and came in sixth. After a chequered career she was sold in 1930 to be broken up. 511 pages, clean and tightly bound. The first and last couple of blank pages have some light foxing. There is an attractive previous owner bookplate on inside front cover (Myrtle & Irving Southworth) and penciled name of Irving Southworth on front flyleaf. Covers firmly attached. Inner rear hinge looks a little weak but holding firmly. There is corner wear and wear to top/bottom of spine. There is some rubbing to cover with some small areas of color loss. The gold illustration of the boat on the cover is bright and fully intact. This is a very rare and collectible book in overall good-plus condition. A wonderful collectible! This book would be a nice addition to a collection. Great gift idea! (Inventory: 424) Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
