Description: A pair of very rare antique Chinese Manchu Qixie platform shoes with bells inserted in the hollow heels. These shoes date from 1800-1850 and are a rare historical examples. So that the sound of the bells were more audible, the hand stitched leather soles have had four small elliptical shapes cut in the leather. The height of the shoes at the toes is 11cm; the height at the back of the shoes is 7.5cm; the part of the leather sole which touches the ground measures 10cm long. They have hand stitched red leather insoles. These shoes would have been worn by courtesans or wealthy women, the bells jingling to attract attention as they walked. These were not used for the 'foot binding' tradition. Condition: the stitching on the leather soles and insoles is intact; the silk material has faded, has some wear, but has not disintegrated; the embroidery has worn in places and is faded, but the original colours are still visible; some rubbing to the material on the heels. Please scroll through all the photos as they form party of the description. Thank you for viewing my listing.
