Artist Biography: Marc Louis Benjamin Vautier, Known as the Elder, or simply Benjamin Vautier, is a Swiss painter. Established in the capital of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia , it became one of the masters of the local school of genre painting . He is the great-grandfather of the artist Ben (Benjamin Vautier) . Son of the future pastor Benjamin Rudolph Louis (then master of the college Morges) and Jeanne Marie Sophie Knight, he attended secondary school in 1839 Morges and following courses at the Academy of Lausanne before starting to Geneva a learning enamel painter at Aimé Jacques and Charles Louis François Glardon. However, he soon left this activity to enter the studio of painter Jean-Léonard Lugardon . At 21, in 1850, he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, where he joined the painting class of Karl Ferdinand Sohn , following also the course of Heinrich Mücke theory of anatomy and proportions . However, only eight months in this institution, preferring training in the prestigious workshop of Rudolf Jordan . He became a member of the association of artists Malkasten. Inspired by the example of Ludwig Knaus , who became his friend and with whom he traveled to Black Forest and Switzerland, particularly in the Bernese Oberland (1853) and again in Switzerland and Paris (1856-1857), he decides to devote himself to the illustration of peasant life and genre painting . He settled in Düsseldorf and married there in 1858 Bertha Louise Euler, notary daughter. It remains now established in this city, sometimes working together with Carl Unker (de) . We know him ten private students. During fifty years it produced an average of five works per year, today paintings and drawings scattered in Europe and the United States. His work also includes an important illustrator activity, particularly for the large farm Karl Leberecht Immermann or Hermann and Dorothea, of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The artist died in Düsseldorf April 25, 1898, and official Germany pays tribute, including Emperor Wilhelm II , which lay a wreath. Benjamin Vautier leaves four children: 1) Charles Joseph Benjamin Vautier (* 1860), painter in Paris. 2) Antonia Clara Vautier (1862-1944), mother of the landscape painter Otto von Watjen , 3) Otto Adolph Paul Vautier (1863-1919), himself a painter and father of two painters of the Geneva school, Otto Vautier (1894 -1918) and Benjamin Vautier (1895-1974). 4) Paul Louis, born in 1865, which followed a commercial career.
