Description: Rare School Slate with "The Brownies" Click images to enlarge Description This is an antique school slate with elf characters engraved on both sides of the wooden frame. marked "The Brownies" on one side and "Edw. L. Kraus" on the other So unique I could not find another remotely like it! I did read up on "The Brownies" on Wikipedia though. They were popular characters in the late 1800's -1900's, from children's books by Palmer Cox. Based on Scottish folk tales, they were little goblin or fairy-like creatures that came out at night to make mischief or do helpful tasks. Slate is approx. 8" x 11" See photos for condition. Note: The slate has a barely visible crack all the way down the middle that can be felt on both sides. I never knew it existed until I just washed the slate. :( I'm always glad to combine shipping.
