AUTOGRAPH LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY THOMAS PAINE, THE POLITICAL PHILOSOPHER AND WRITER FAMOUSLY KNOWN FOR AUTHORING COMMON SENSE (1776) Autograph letter handwritten by Thomas Paine and addressed to William Duane regarding the harbor defenses of New York: “As the Aurora is become a center of information to the Union I send you some observations on a motion of Mr. Mumford for fortifying New York; and as the writer of this respects the character of Mr. Mumford, that gentleman will find nothing to be displeased with personally in these observations.” PAINE WRITES TO JOURNALIST WILLIAM DUANE ON THE HARBOR DEFENSES OF NEW YORK: “I SEND YOU SOME OBSERVATIONS ON A MOTION OF MR. MUMFORD FOR FORTIFYING NEW YORK” The letter is one page with the closing sentiments and signature having been removed, measures 7.25 by 2.5 inches, in very good condition with toning and soiling, and matted and framed with two prints of and related to Paine to an overall size of 16.75 by 9.5 inches. Material handwritten and signed by Paine is virtually unobtainable and highly desirable with correspondence from Paine commanding as much as $121,000 in December 2007 and $93,750 in June 2018 at Christie’s. MATERIAL HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED BY PAINE IS VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE William Duane (1760-1835) was an American journalist and editor of the Philadelphia Aurora, an anti-Federalist newspaper which was active from 1794 to 1824. Duane was so outspoken against the Federalist Party that he was once pulled from his office and beaten in the street by an unruly mob and arrested twice under the Alien and Sedition Acts. Thomas Jefferson, who credited the Aurora and Duane with his presidential election win, had Duane acquitted of the charges.
