Description: Rare FOURMAINTRAUX COURQUIN TEA CADDY Antique French DESVRES Faience c1890 This is a rare and whimsical French Antique Faience FOURMAINTRAUX COURQUIN TEA CADDY made in the Desvres region of France. The subject matter includes a Tea Caddy Bottle, decorated on both sides with figures in bas-relief. One side has a woman in a beautiful period dress, gown, and ruffled collar, holding her dog on a leash; the other side with a well-dressed man with cane wearing a period jacket and waistcoat, breeches, and bicorn hat under one arm. The border is artfully modeled and decorated in a floral theme. The bottom underside is glazed; the rim foot is unglazed. There are makers marks on the underside: markings in a manganese glaze of a stylized FE, 53, 1638, and FRANCE. These are early marks of Fourmaintraux Courquin (c.1875-1900), old and original French Art Pottery, made at the Fourmaintraux Factory in the late 19th Century. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with bright blue, green, brown, lemon yellow, iron red, and magenta. Please note this is not Quimper or Nevers faience, but Desvres fine French art pottery. Dimensions (in inches): 4.4 Tall X 3.3 Wide X 2.1 Deep Weight 8.1 Oz. The estimated date is circa 1905. This FOURMAINTRAUX TEA CADDY Antique French DESVRES is in very good condition- there is a minor 1/8 in. chip fret on the outside rim edge of the base (see photos). Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this item is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. This item is sold as is, as described. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently "perfect". This is not damage- this is part of the history of old faience pottery and how it was made. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note that this item is photographed in natural light; shadows that may appear as irregularities are not necessarily chips, cracks, or discoloration.
