Japonicum and its few cultivars are well known for their generous leaves and blazing fall colors in varying and vivid palates of orange gold and red. The cultivar Otaki is clothed in medium sized orbicular leaves that are lightly toothed on older wood. It forms a large round topped tree around 8 feet in 10 years. Has open structure allowing light to penetrate for those shade loving hosta and fern. The fall color is generally a unique blending of gold and red/orange when given some afternoon shade, more red/orange otherwise. Adapts well to container culture where it would stay smaller.
