Description: A wonderful and rare piece of history from the most primitive tribe left in the Amazon; the Yanomami, which are indigenous to the Amazonian regions of Brazil and Venezuela and are believed to be the most primitive, culturally intact people in the world. Hand woven of natural fibers including majagua fibre, reed & mamure plant, this Yanomami burden (or gathering) basket is a rare piece of indigenous history that will make a gorgeous addition to your home &/or tribal collection! Tightly woven & decorated with masticated charcoal pigment drawn circles & lines which are reminiscent of rivers and dots surround the outer exterior walls. The core is constructed with many inner rings for stability and palm leaf straps for transporting. Originally the straps were placed over the forehead and allowed one to keep hands free for gathering and carry the basket on one's back. No major structural damage; signs of old water damage are present along the base of the basket as well as some minor wear commensurate with age and use.
