In 1921 he became principal of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, anearly day Brooklyn-based yeshiva initially founded as an elementary school in1918.[3] He subsequently added a high school and postgraduate program to the yeshiva. His policies were often informed by theOrthodox philosophical movement Torah im Derech Eretz.[4] Biography Mendlowitz was born in Vilg(today Svetlice, Slovakia), in the Austria-Hungarian Empire, a smalltown near the border of Poland, to a Hasidic[2] family:[5] Moshe and Bas-Sheva Mendlowitz.[6] Shraga Feivel pronounced his family name Mendelovich. His mother died when he was ten. Hewas twelve when the family relocated to Mezlaborc (now Slovak: Medzilaborce), where he studied "with RebAaron, dayyan of Mezo-Laboretz, who considered him his toppupil."[5] Having received semicha at age 17, he continued his studies underRabbi Simcha BunimSchreiber (the Shevet Sofer, grandson of the Chatam Sofer). Throughout his life, however, he refused to usethe title of Rabbi and insisted on being referred to as "Mr.Mendlowitz." At age 22, he "married hisstep-mother's younger sister, Bluma Rachel."[6][7] in the town of Humenn, Slovakia, and began to study several not well knownJewish writings, including the works of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch;this briefly led to controversy until he could prove the relevance of Hirsch'swork in defending the Orthodox viewpoint against attempts at reforming Jewishpractice. Activities He actively sought positions in Germany and the United States, with the intention ofdisseminating knowledge of Judaism to Jews previously unexposed to theirheritage, and in September 1913, he arrived alone in Philadelphia.[8]:p.32 He lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania, for seven years, teaching in the local Talmud Torah (afternoonprogram in Jewish studies). In 1920 he was able to bring his family fromHungary, and settled in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Reb Shraga Feivel joined forceswith Chazan Yossele Rosenblatt in1923, to produce Dos Yiddishe Licht, ashort-lived English and Yiddish language weekly that included articles of commentand inspiration. It eventually became a daily but was forced to discontinuepublication in 1927, because of financial difficulties. In fact, ChazanRosenblatt went on a year-long concert tour to pay back the monies owed tocreditors. [9] The founding members of Yeshiva TorahVodaas soon offered him the principalship of the institution. Originallystarting off as an elementary school, Rabbi Shraga Feivel soon added thesecond Yeshiva high school inAmerica. (The first being the Talmudical Academy, associated with YeshivaCollege, founded in 1916.) The yeshiva opened its mesivta in1926[10]:p.76 and then under Rabbi Mendlowitz' direction, anotherearly development in America (but also in competition with Yeshiva College), apost-graduate program. Rabbi Mendlowitz first appointed Rabbi Gedalia Schorr to the faculty of the Yeshiva, later tobecome its principal and Rosh Yeshiva. Despite his devotion to Torah Vodaathhe assisted in the founding (both personally and financially) of several similarinstitutions, such as Mesivta Chaim Berlin (towhich he relinquished a number of his top pupils), Telshe Cleveland and Beis Medrash Gevoha. Allgrew to occupy important places in 20th century American Orthodoxy. His work in Jewish education extendedto several other organisations he founded. Aish Dos was a specializedinstitution that focused on teaching outreach skills, Torah U'mesora was anationwide umbrella organization for Jewish day schools, and Beis Medrash Elyon wasone of America's first post-graduate yeshivas (which also included a kollel). In 1931 he founded Camp Mesivta, the first yeshivaday camp. Mendelowitz renounced eating meatafter the Holocaust, saying: "There has beenenough killing in the world."[11][12]
