Description: “Red Dog” aka "Red Dawg" is actually a kind of rock that comes from coal waste. It’s a combination of low-quality coal and shale with a lot of carbon in it. Mine operators used to just toss this waste material into piles, and that resulted in the carbon in the shale burning in a low-oxygen environment, much like what happens in a coke oven. Some of the cooking rock turned red as a result of the heat. But, the red rock was still just waste material, until some folks thought it might be a good idea to go out and collect some of this stuff (much of which was, um, pretty much free to a good home) for use as a cheap paving material, and, voila! Red dog! Again, red dog was cheap (often free), so, rather than paving your driveway or parking lot. Just spread some of this stuff instead. It wasn’t going to work as well or last as long as something like blacktop or concrete, but, it worked about as well as gravel, and, again, it was far less expensive. So, when things started to break down, just go get another load and spread it again. Red dog was so cost effective that the state of Pennsylvania ,West Virginia ,Kentucky ,Virginia and many municipalities actually used it on dirt roads as a gravel substitute. These days, red dog is becoming very rare.
