Description: Here is a very nice old fraternal medal made of a white metal composition, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 2 & 1/8" across, with a plain edge, and it has been neatly holed at the top. This attractive, and to me, mighty cool piece shows just minimal wear, and it has toned well since it was struck, probably around the time of the dawn of this group, and it has acquired a pleasing grey coloring, with only a little variation. I have not done anything to clean or alter its appearance, and four of the photos have been "enhanced" for clarity. Honestly, I cannot find out anything regarding this particular medal, as it appears to apply to what may have been an "elite" rank in the organization - I have seen similar pieces, but not with the same obverse legend. The first lodge of the Ancient Order of Druids was formed in 1781 in London, and the concept of a group based of what was then thought to be the symbols and rites of the original Druids of Caesar's era became popular. In an effort to gain more freedom from the original lodge, over a hundred other lodges broke away from the London group in 1833, the newer organization becoming the United Ancient Order of Druids. I cannot find the word "Imperial" anywhere in my research. The obverse pictures a heavily bearded, hooded and veiled gentleman facing left, and around this arresting portrait is "Ancient Imperial Order Of Druids". The reverse pictures three Druids under an oak tree, the fellow at the left holding his hands up in supplication, a genuflecting figure at the center also with a hand upraised. A third, gowned figure faces the viewer, his hands clasped, and a swirling fire burns atop a pedestal to his right, "Amity" at the bottom. Great! $220.
