Description: Rare vintage late 1930's piece, a design of couture fashion legend Madame Alix Gres. Madame Gres is considered one of the greatest French courturiers of the 20th century, renowned for her imaginative designs and skilled use of sculpting high end fabrics. Her creations are found in museums around the world. Some of her celebrity clientele included Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy. Her contributions to and influence on the fashion industry of her time are well documented, although early designs like this one are quite rare to find in person. I have spent many hours researching this particular piece. The label indicates that this is a design by Madame Gres, that was produced in the United States as an authorized reproduction or "adaption" for the ready to wear market here. It was most likely part of a matched dress set. This lovely rare jacket is made of a sheer fabric in a colorful floral pattern trimmed in pink rayon crepe. All over, intricate soutache work in pink adds a textured finish to this striking garment. Stylized neckline, short sleeves with peaked shoulders, and a curved hemline. Beautifully tailored fit with accented waist and all original buttons at front. Jacket is in good vintage condition with a few flaws to note. There is some stress & tearing to each side of collar at back, please see close up photos. There is some yellowing to inside of collar & tag, and some marks at front of collar as shown. There are belt loops at waist however original belt is missing. While it is sturdy enough for careful wear, it is delicate and irreplaceable. I would strongly recommend this piece be enjoyed primarily as a collectors piece and archived or displayed appropriately. Pictured on a US women's size approximate 4 mannequin with 25" waist.
