Description: For Sale: Very Rare Antique IBM Model 010 Table Top 80 Column Electric Card Punch Machine Originally used at the John Crane Packing Company, Chicago Illinois (see included punch cards). The rear of the unit is stamped "Property of International Business Machines Corp." "010-14183 E7" "ARMONK, NY" Manufactured or possibly re-manufactured sometime after 1964 when IBM moved their headquarters to Armonk, NY. In early computing, a keypunch was the source of data and programming. As one typed on the keyboard, the characters were punched (using a solenoid) into a punch card using a unique 12-hole code. The operator would type one card column at a time. Each card had 80 columns. After all your data or program lines were punched, the collected cards were read by standalone card devices (like a sorter) or by card readers attached to a computer. As late as the early 1970's at IBM, programs consisted of thousands of cards held in metal trays (that fit into special file cabinets.) A program library was thus very similar to a real library, only with many trays of cards instead of books. Measures 8 1/2 x 19 1/2 x 8 1/4" Roughly 40 lbs -- considered "semi-portable" In very nice condition, (better than those I've seen on display at computer museums!)
