Part of the German Expressionist movement together with Emil Nolde, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff and Erich Heckel. His works was declared “ Entartete / Degenerate by the Nazi Party in 1936 and he fled to Denmark in 1937 where he resided on the Danish island, Fano, until his death in 1967. Reinhard Heinemann was born in Altona, Germany in 1895. He showed great artistic promise as a youth and was a private pupil of Max Liebermann . He was accepted into the artists student league in New York 1913. He spent a year studying in New York and was on his way back to Germany by boat, when he was arrested due to his German nationality in the ongoing World War One at the time. He was prisoned on the Isle of Man, UK from 1914-1918. During his time as prisoner of war, he continued to sketch and became a pupil of fellow prisoner and artist, Rudolf Kuhlmann (1901-1976) After his release at the end of World War One, Heinemann returned to Germany where he produced modernist prints, watercolors and oil paintings. He exhibited at the Kaiser Friedrich Kunsthalle in Berlin 1927 and took study tours to Holland and the UK. After Hitlers takeover of power in 1933, Heinemann refused to conform to the new art decrees and working became more and more difficult. In 1936, he was exhibiting at Gallerie Ferdinand Moller in Berlin together with Emil Nolde, Karl Schmidt-Rotluff and Erich Heckel. At the show, the Nazi Party officially declared his art “ Entartete / Degenerate and forbid him to paint. A year later in 1937, he fled Germany and build his own studio on the island of Fano in Denmark. In Denmark he continued to paint and did a series of costal landscapes and prints. When Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1940, his house and studio was taken over by German troops. He lived underground in Copenhagen for a small period, before escaping to Sweden, where he remained until the end of the war. Heinemann exhibited frequently after the war and had solo shows at Gallerie Henning Larsen in Copenhagen 1949. He returned to Germany many times to exhibit, but changed his nationality to Danish and remained living in Denmark. He was featured at the Hamburg Kunsthalle in 1954 and in Lübeck 1964. A number of his works can be found at the Hamburg state museum. Shipping fees: United States/ Canada: 40 dollars. ( delivery time: About 3 - 5 working days.) European union : Free shipping.
