Description: This excavated Pattern 1839 0val US Cartridge Box Plate has a perfect dark patina, typical of relics dug long ago. The brass face is smooth with a central US. The plate's reverse has 95% of the lead fill remaining and exhibits a pitted appearance. Neither of the two iron loops remain, the lead backing features two (hard to read) stampings, W.H. Wikinson/Springfield. Mass and T.J. Shepard. A paper label is taped to the back. This is the original ad from the Horse Soldier catalog. Plate is accompanied by an old Horse Soldier Letter of Authenticity dated October 15, 1992. Included are two photos dated 10/21/2006. Provenance, recovered from the Confederate position at the base of the Mule Shoe or Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania, VA. Ex Wendell Lang collection.
