Description: Reynold Weidenaar etching. This is an original pencil signed etching by American artist Reynold Weidenaar (American, 1915–1985) entitled “The Road is Rough.” The beautifully executed etching dates to 1944 and was commissioned for a presentation print by the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. Some of the tiny signs in the background and the foreground are only visible under a magnifying glass. One such sign reads; NOTICE / THIS ETCHER HAS MET HIS DREAM GIRL, AGE 28, AND IS GETTING MARRIED / GET HIS STUFF NOW - WHILE HE IS ETCHING FOR A REPUTATION - INSTEAD OF A FAMILY. Paper measures 9-1/2'' by 12-1/4'' and image area is 6-15/16'' by 8-15/16''. Etching is unframed and in very good condition. It has small light stain on the left margin near the edge (see photo 3) which would not be visible if framed. The paper has some light toning from previous mat, and also has two pieces of tape attached to top which could be removed. Questions are welcome and thanks for the interest! Insurance is included in shipping price. Reynold Weidenaar was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1915. He studied at the Kendall School of Design and at the Kansas City Art Institute with Jackson Lee Nesbitt from 1938 to 1940. In 1944, Weidenaar received a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 1949, the Louis Comfort Tiffany scholarship. These grants enabled Weidenaar to travel and record his impressions of other countries, particularly Mexico. In 1949 he was elected to the National Academy and he was later raised to full academician status. Working mostly on copper, Weidenaar produced 212 plates over the course of his life.
