Description: Rare English drabware jug portraying Bacchus and Pan produced by W. Ridgway & Co. sometime between 1834 and 1853 The stoneware jug stands raised on narrow round stepped pedestal base and is of rounded bulbous form with a pinched neck and large raised and formed open pouring spout with a raised handle molded with a figure of Pan applied to the side. The body of the jug is molded in relief with repeat portraits of Bacchus set within a scrolling design with acanthus leaves with fruiting vines applied around the pouring spout. The jug is decorated in drab glaze. The back stamp is on an applied pad of clay. The mark displays an urn and anchor in relief with "W. Ridgway & Co." impressed along a ribbon banner. This mark was only used between 1834 and 1854. CAUTION: There are a multitude of fairly contemporary pieces produced in the 20th century that mimic this pattern and purport to be a Ridgway piece. Aside from the lack of age and use on recent pieces, note that Ridgway marked every piece. Do your research. We stand firmly behind the authenticity of all of our offerings., CONDITION: In remarkable antique condition with no chips, cracks or other blemished save for two pinhead kiln spots in the glaze, as shown, which occurred in production.
