Strathearn (1881-1968) was trained as an artist just after the turn of 20th century at the Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco and then Best's art school. After this he returned to Ventura County, California, where his family ran a large cattle ranch. The family ultimately owned 15,000 acres in Simi Valley, the buildings and grounds of which now compose Strathearn Historical Park and Museum. During most of his life, the artist would sketch while herding cattle and then paint from both his memories and sketches. His art was exhibited widely in local shows. A number of his paintings are on display at the Simi Valley Historical Society which makes its home at the museum. They portray a life that has largely vanished in Simi Valley.
