Description: Guitarists love the sound of Vintage Fender Tweed amps and you must love it to have it when the cost is $15,000-$25,000 for one of those beauties. However there is another way to achieve that sound. You can use the preamp electronics from a tube Roberts/Akai tape machine. It only puts out 5 watts, but you can run that output to a solid state amp or mic it through the PA. Ritchie Blackmore has used these on many recordings and Michael Oldfield used one for the two distorted guitars in Tubular Bells. The reason they give such a great sound is they are class “A” amplifiers, so are all of the 1950-1960 Fender Tweed and Black Faced amps, also the Vox line of amplifiers. What I have to sell you is one set of electronics which was removed from a Roberts 770X, (Akai M8), tape recorder. It contains all of the tubes, including the rare 12AD7; this is the special non-microphonic, low-hum version of the 12AX7 which was only manufactured by Sylvania for a few years. This is a DIY Project; you need some basic electronic skills to build it. I’m including the plans for the modification and a set of links to current discussion groups.
