There he created highly detailed drawings for various Colt Studio books, magazines, and calendars, such as this lot. He soon turned to the Polaroid camera to shoot photographs of posed male models to serve as guides for his drawings, ultimately building a formidable reputation for himself as one of the most important photographers of the male form. French's fine art training and drawing skills can be credited for that success. As Nat Gozzano, COLT Studio's archivist and art director since 1997, noted: "As opposed to the early male pin-ups that were for gay audiences, but still masquerading as muscle magazines and athletic training magazines, Jim was more directly tailoring his images to the taste of gay audiences. His composition was so strong and from life drawing classes, he really knew how to pose models with strong tension in their bodies – and that set him apart from other people right away." The "Lüger" drawings featured hyper-masculine subjects: construction men, leather, surfers, cowboys, wrestlers, and sailors. The first print appearance of a Lüger Studio (2 drawings from his "Cowboy" series) was in the May–June 1966 issue of Young Physique. Photographic copies of the drawing sets were offered for purchase through mail order and were advertised in various magazines available at the time: The Young Physique, Mars, Muscleboy, Sir Gee, Male Classics, and Fizeek Art Quarterly. These copies were offered as thematic sets of either six or eight drawings. Lüger Studios also produced four different photographic sets of various male models. To avoid legal troubles, Lüger Studio offerings contained minimal frontal nudity but were nonetheless erotic and humorously creative in their suggestiveness.
