Description: Licinius II as Caesar | AE Follis Reference: RIC VII 34 Date: 317-320 CE Obverse: D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C: bust, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse: PROVIDENTIAE CAESS; Jupiter, nude, chlamys draped across left shoulder, standing left, holding Victory on globe in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand. Gamma in right field. SMN in exergue Mint: Nicomedia Size: 18.9 mm Weight: 2.61 grams Nicely silvered on both the obverse and reverse (quite uncommon for these types). In the years leading up to the issue of this coin, Constantine and Licinius' uneasy coexistence following the Edict of Milan (313 CE) was breaking down. After defeats at Cibalae (316 CE) and Mardia (316-317 CE), Licinius I retreated to the East and was forced to recognize Constantine I as the senior Augustus. As part of the peace treaty negotiated in February of 317 CE at Serdica, Constantine I's two sons Crispus and Constantine II and Licinius' son Licinius II were elevated to the rank of Caesar. In the reverse legend, "CAESS" indicates that there were multiple caesars at the time this coin was issued, these are the three aforementioned sons of Constantine or Licinius. This coin type is directly advertising the terms of Constantine and Licinius' peace treaty, while celebrating the elevation of Licinius II and his co-Caesares. Of course, the "cooperation" between Constantine and Licinius would not last and Constantine would finally depose and execute Licinius and his son in 324 CE.
