Description: Royal Tichelaar Makkum framed tile. This is a well-executed windmill, painted by hand. Sorry, I don't know how to date this piece since the firm has been in business for 500 years. Royal Richelaar Makkum (est. 1572, and a family firm since 1640) has worldwide recognition in ceramics. The hallmark should be painted on the tile's back. Because of the framing, with the maker's documentation affixed to the back, the hallmarks are not visible. Here is the translation of the text printed on the back: "This old Dutch tile was manufactured by Tichelaars Royal Makkumer Aardewerk in Tile Factory B.V. Makkum, Netherlands ~ Soon after 1600, hand-shaped tiles were made from domestic clay and hand-painted in the Netherlands, building on a ceramic tradition from the Middle Ages. This method, with the tin glaze as a determining factor, has been followed in our company for more than three centuries. Each tile has its own character thanks to the dedication and craftsmanship of the painter". Because the hand-painted designs are done on top of the tin glaze, the pictures “flow”, or give softer definition than traditional under-glaze painting. Condition: Excellent giftable condition. No mentionable condition issues. No visible chips, breaks, paint deterioration, cracks, hairlines, dents, divots, or damage to wood frame. Unpacked weight: 1 Lb. 1 Oz.
