Description: Royal Worcester Pitcher Blush Ivory 3 5/8" Mold #1439 Floral 1891 Gold Outlining Exquisite Decorative ANTIQUE Blush Ivory 3 5/8" PITCHER from ROYAL WORCESTER, Hand Painted, Flowers & Leaves w/GOLD Outlining & Gold Trim, from Worcester, Worcestershire, England, circa 1891 DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid. This is hand painted on ivory blush with a gold trim on the rim, handle, foot and extensive gold highlighting and outlining on the painting. The colors used are: blue, rust, orange & yellow w/gold on blush ivory. The pitcher has a very ornate gold painted handle. On these pitchers, the gold is always painted over red which tends to show through the gold on the handle. The most striking thing about this pitcher is the extensive use of gold outlining and highlighting, especially on the flowers and leaves. CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb. For some reason, the color painted on these pitcher's handles is always a deep red which is then over painted in solid gold. As the gold wears, the red shows through. On this pitcher, the handle's gold shows no wear. See the photos. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks or wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS: The pitcher has a bottom diameter of 1 3/4" with a height of 3 5/8". From handle to the opposite side, it is 3 5/8. The capacity is 8 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Back in 1751, Dr. John Wall, a surgeon, William Davis, an apothecary, and a group of 13 local businessmen established a porcelain factory. In Worcester in 1756 Robert Hancock was the first man to apply transferring of prints onto porcelain. By 1789 the quality of Worcester Porcelain earned the company the prestigious “Royal Warrant” as Manufacturers to their Majesties after a visit from George III; thus the word “Royal” was added to the name. Royal Worcester as a manufacturer of extremely high quality wares rapidly became known for producing prestigious items for the upper classes. After centuries in the porcelain business, surviving wars and depressions, Royal Worcester experienced a number of ownership changes after the 1980’s. The final result being the cessation of business and the sale of the trade names and intellectual property in 2009 to Portmeirion Potteries plc. Geoffrey A. Godden in Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks calls this mark #4350 which was used from 1876-1891. The “No Dots above Royal” on the mark identifies the year cipher as 1891. The registration mark #144100 was registered in 1890. So, the circa for this pitcher is 1891. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
