Volume I is a first edition dated 1886, volume II is dated 1888 and "Second Edition" is stated on the title page. Both books are in very good condition. In brown cloth covered boards with black stamped graphics on front and back panels and gilt text with black stamped graphics on spines. Boards are darkened, more so for Vol. I and with mild scuffs and faint stains. Damp stains on upper page edges. Edges at head and tail of board spine are split, chipped and fraying, more so on Vol. I. The fore-edge corners are Vol. 1 are softened and the lower fore-edge corners are bumped. Smaller bumps on fore-edge corners of Vol. II. All fore-edge corners are rubbed through to some degree. Previous owner (the Woman's Literary Club) bookplates on both front paste downs. The front inside gutter of Vol. 1 is cracked - see photo. Page edges are age-tone else books are internally clean and text blocks are sound. Please use close-up options for best inspection.
