Description: Welcome. For your consideration is a large vintage oil painting of a Gloucester, Massachusetts harbor scene with fishing vessels by listed artist Russ Webster (1904-1984). This impressionist painting was completed on canvas and signed by the artist on the lower right, Russ Webster. It was not dated, judging by the patina I am estimating the painting to be from the 1950's-1960's time period. This classic Gloucester harbor scene is a desirable and sought after example of this artist's work. As for the artist, Russ Webster was born in Massachusetts in 1904 and he was a long time resident of Lynn, MA. Russ studied in Rockport, MA with renowned artists Paul Strisick, Wayne Beam Morrell and especially under the tutelage of Emile A. Gruppe, who remained a life long friend and frequent traveling and painting companion. His studies and painting excursions with Gruppe took him to Florida, Northern New England and Europe. Russ painted in the characteristic Cape Ann, MA style clearly influenced by Emile A. Gruppe. He worked as a commercial artist at General Electric in Lynn, Massachusetts. Russ's colorful impressionist landscapes and harbor scenes are in many private collections. Russ Webster passed away in the city of Lynn, MA in 1984. This painting is in overall very good vintage condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. The painting does have a faint stretcher line on the top of the canvas. I personally do not find this to be a blemish, rather of part of the paintings honest history. In my opinion, this is not something you notice from a normal viewing distance. Unframed the painting measures 24" in height x 30" wide and together with the original vintage grey driftwood style wooden frame and antique linen liner it measures 32" x 38". The handsome vintage frame is in overall good condition with some minor surface abrasions consistent with its age. This is an excellent example of this artist's work.
