Description: I did some research on this one and I came up with these facts (please double check for accuracy): -In the 1940s, the LAPD began issuing the Safety Speed Clamshell Model along with their 6 inch 38 Special revolver as standard issue equipment. -The LAPD favored its mechanical clamshell design because, by pressing a hidden button, it sprang open depositing the revolver right into the officer's hand. -I believe this particular holster dates from the 1940s-50s since it is marked as being manufactured by the Safety Speed Holster Co. in Los Angeles, California. The company reportedly moved to Montebello, California in the 1960s. -The Safety Speed Clamshell Model can be seen in action by viewing the two main officers in reruns of the hit TV show Adam 12. -The push button release works great and the spring mechanism snaps the holster right open. The holster didn't swivel at the rivet but I didn't put much pressure on it. The leather shows signs of wear consistent with its age and use (see photos). I believe this item would make a fantastic display piece in someone's collection or even a functional holster out in the field. Photos are of the exact item that you will receive and are considered part of the item description. Original, Los Angeles Police (LAPD), Right-Handed Clam Shell Holster. Made by the famous Safety Speed Holster Company in Los Angeles, California (Now out of business). This is the very desirable 6 inch barrel type. The holster is made for a S&W "K-Frame" Revolver. The leather shows wear near the push button release and top stitching. It would make a great historical display piece or could still be used as a duty holster. I believe that this particular holster dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s, since this maker later moved to Montebello, California in the 1960s. The Clam Shell is a mechanical holster. When worn, the officer can depress a hidden button, opening the holster and placing his firearm into his hand instantly. This type of holster was worn by the main characters on the famous TV police show Adam-12 in the 1970s." Basketweave
