Description: RCA Victor Gold Seal – BMG Music, New York NY, USA © 1990. Collectors set of ARTURO TOSCANINI conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Recordings were made 1943-1951 of VERDI: AIDA, FALSTAFF, and the REQUIEM plus Te Deum. Nabucco, Luisa Miller, Inno delle nazioni (Hymn of the Nations). Each CD Jewel Case holds a descriptive booklet (English, German, French, Italian) about the recorded works, composer and the conductor or the Libretto. An excerpt: “Aida is the work with which the 19-year-old Arturo Toscanini, fresh out of the conservatory, made his unanticipated debut as a conductor on June 30, 1886 in Rio de Janeiro. The opera was not quite 15 years old at the time – its world premiere had taken place in Cairo in December 1871… “After Cairo and Milan, Parma – Toscanini’s native town, was the location of the next Aida, in April 1872, there is a possibility that Arturo, age 5, was present at the event… music-loving relatives had begun taking him to performances…when he was 4… “Otello would be given its premiere at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala (1886) with Toscanini playing second cello in the orchestra…” Thus, the works of Verdi, like those of Brahms, were for Toscanini music of a contemporary voice. RECORDINGS: Jewell Case of CD 1-3 – Verdi “AIDA” Libretto Robert Shaw Chorale/Robert Shaw, director (NBC broadcasts of March 26 & April 2, 1949) Jewell Case of CD 4-5 – Verdi “FALSTAFF” Libretto (in 2 booklets) Robert Shaw Chorale/Robert Shaw, director (NBC broadcasts of April 1 & 8, 1950) Jewell Case of CD 6-7 – Verdi Libretto Te Deum (Four Sacred Pices, No. 4) – Robert Shaw Chorale Messa da Requiem – Robert Shaw Chorale Nabucco: Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate – Westminster Choir/John Finlay Williamson, director Luisa Miller: Quando le sere al placido – Jan Peerce Inno dell nazioni/Hymn of the Naitons – Jan Peerce & Westminster Choir (NBC broadcasts: 1943, 1951, 1954) Arturo Toscanini (March 25, 1867 – January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor, and one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was renowned for his intensity, perfectionism, and his ear for orchestral detail and sonority. Toscanini was the music director of La Scala in Milan and the New York Philharmonic. Later in his career, he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–1954). This led to “Toscanini” becoming a household name, especially in the United States, through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire. -------------DID YOU KNOW: Your purchases from “ldcdclassics” help underwrite private piano lessons and free instruments for deserving children!
