After the outbreak of the war, negotiations concerning Confederate envoys on the Trent fell upon him. Later, for 20 years, he was minister to France.2 pp, 4 1/2 x 7, ALS on mourning stationary, Washington, 1859 Oct. 6. He writes to Commodore Shubrick [likely William Branford Shubrick, an officer in the Navy whose service included the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War]. Lyons writes: “Captain Buchanan [who was in charge of the Washington Navy Yard] holds out to me a hope that you will be disposed to accompany me tomorrow in a visit to the Navy Yard.
