About author, Friedrich Glauser:Friedrich Glauser (4 February 1896 in Vienna – 8 December 1938 in Nervi) was a German-language Swiss writer often referred to as the Swiss Simenon. Glauser, a morphine and opium addict, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent much of his life in psychiatric wards, insane asylums, and prison, where he was held for forging prescriptions. His diverse experiences, including two years with the French Foreign Legion in North Africa, working as a coal miner, and as a hospital orderly, profoundly influenced his writing. His first novel, "Gourrama," written between 1928 and 1930, reflects his time in the Foreign Legion. Tragically, he died at the age of forty-two from a stroke caused by cerebral infarction, just two days before his wedding. A year after his death, the 1939 film "Thumbprint," featuring his character Sergeant Studer, achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, cementing Studer's fame beyond that of his creator. Glauser's literary legacy is preserved in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern. His Sergeant Studer novels, known for their elegant prose and acute observations of society's margins, have made him a cult figure in Europe. Since 1987, the annual Glauser Prize has been awarded to outstanding German-language crime writers, honoring Glauser's significant contribution to the genre. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
