The reason is the person was very tall and the original height was low for him, as the couch was designed to do. It works fine without it, but it is higher sitting and more sturdy with the board. All of our items are being sold in the condition we found them, with minor flaws because they are either a semi-Antique or Antique and may need slight restoration to bring them back to showroom condition. We reiterate that each item we sell is used, and by definition has various blemishes. Most items have the dust of age and could use a cleaning.
