Description: This is a SERVICED, working, 1957 Smith-Corona “Silent-Super” portable typewriter with its original hard shell carrying case and brand new two color ink ribbon. This particular example is in the desirable and beautiful “Alpine Blue” color, and features the larger “Pica” typeface. During the servicing process we typed extensively on this machine and it performed extremely well. It’s an extremely smooth typer but this line of machines is famous for that - the Silent-Supers are some of my personal favorites to type on (as a collector myself) and have an extremely high build quality. These were Smith-Corona’s top of the line portables when they were released, and it really shows. This is a fully-featured typewriter with complete keyboard including multiple keys not standard to typewriters at the time, like the 1/! key and the +/= key. It has a full tabular system in good working order, as well as “piano key action” as Smith-Corona called it, which means that rather than the keys pivoting under your finger when press from a single point leading to the key leaning forward at the bottom of the keystroke, each key moves smooth down with your finger staying level the entire time. In my opinion this is a big reason why they feel so nice to use. Your fingers never are pressing at an angle, which can lead to them sliding off the keys. Each type slug has been fully cleaned to leave a crisp, clear imprint on your paper. As mentioned, a brand new two color ink ribbon has been installed also to ensure that it types clearly. Please see the photos for a full type test example. This model features “basket shifting,” meaning that rather than having the entire carriage move up and down when you press the shift key, only the type bars do (called the type “basket”) which makes for a much better typing experience. This was the way most every typewriter ended up being as time when on, but Smith-Corona were really the pioneers of it. This typewriter has been cleaned inside and out. Every body panel has been cleaned and adjustments have been made to ensure that this typewriter is ready for use. The typewriter is in fantastic condition with minor wear and slight color fade (see photos). It clearly was taken care of even before I serviced it. Please note that this typewriter will be LOCKED FOR SHIPPING to prevent damage. To unlock your typewriter, there is a small switch on the right side of the carriage located between the carriage and the body of the typewriter. Flip this switch and your typewriter will be ready for use. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions about typewriters. I’m always happy to help people with their new machine or anyone with any questions about typewriters. Comes from a smoke-free home. All items sold as-is as shown in photos. We NEVER use stock photos. The photos you see are of the actual typewriter you will receive. Please review ALL photos carefully. Feel free to ask any questions. Thank you for considering this great typewriter. If there is a shipping option that you would like us to look into, please don’t hesitate to ask.
