Rear hinge of first volume has splits but is holding nicely. Sewing is tight, no loose pages. Introduction and Notes by Andrew Lang. A treasure in these volumes are the original illustrations by Phiz, with tissue guards in place. The engravings are remarkably clean, no foxing noted; the tissue guards are quite tanned with age but in only one case (title page of v. 2, see photo) is the facing page affected. Sunned spines aside, this is a lovely and rare edition of Copperfield, a great piece of Dickensiana for a collector.Octavo 6" x 8.5" Vol. 1 xi, 527; Vol. 2 534 p. David Copperfield was first issued as a monthly serial 1849-50. The illustrations by Phiz are among the most admired of his works.
