Description: 1985-2001 Breeder's Cup Glasses This is a set of Breeder's Cup Glasses from the first year of issue in 1985 to 2001. There are sixteen glasses included in this set: 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 (regular and also a "mistake" glass,) 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001. The Breeder's Cup came to being after a group of thoroughbred breeders in Kentucky formed a plan to create a year-end championship for horse racing. Led by John Gaines, this plan resulted in the first Breeder's Cup racing event in 1984. There was no souvenir glass produced for that first year of the Breeder's Cup held at Hollywood Park in California. In 1985, the Breeder's Cup was held at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. The first souvenir glass for the Breeder's Cup was introduced that year. This glass is rare and very valuable, as a limited number of glasses were made. The shape of this glass is different than the traditional julep shaped glasses that have appeared ever since 1985. The 1985 glass is unique with its pedestal base...see the last two photos. There were no glasses produced in the years 1986 and 1987, but since 1988, there has been a glass produced each year for the Breeder's Cup event. Included in this listing is a glass for each of the years from 1985 to 2001 for which a glass was produced. I stopped collecting the glasses after 2001, and thus the reason for this sale of glasses from 1985 to 2001. Also part of this set is two different glasses for the year 1991. There is the regular Breeder's Cup glass for 1991, and a "mistake" glass for that year. On the back of the regular 1991 glass, the winner of the 1990 Turf race is listed correctly as "In the Wings." On the included 1991 "mistake" glass, the winner of the Turf race is incorrectly listed as "French Glory." This mistake glass is more valued. The glasses are approximately 5.75 inches high and 2 3/4 inches wide at the top with the exception of the 1985 glass that is slightly taller at almost 6 inches high. The glasses have never been used, and have been stored away and not displayed in the light. The glasses have the Breeder's Cup racing design for each year on the front. The reverse of the glass lists all of the winners of the Breeder's Cup races since its inaugural event in 1984. Shipping will be via USPS Mail or UPS Ground. The shipping charge includes insurance. If actual shipping cost is less than the charged amount, I will refund the difference to you. The glasses are in overall very good condition. The two exceptions to this are the 1990 glass and the 2001 glass. The 1999 glass is frosted, and on the reverse, there is a small area that is slightly paler in color. The 2001 glass looks to have a scratch on the front of it. I would prefer to sell the glasses as a set for someone interested in collecting the Breeder's Cup souvenirs. If the set does not sell, however, after repeated listings, I will consider breaking it up and selling the glasses individually.
