Description: Beautiful fold-out map of colonization and trade in the New World. This handsome map is lithographed in full color on two sides and opens to a generous 23" x 30". It is a fascinating window into the history of the area known as the Spanish Main — the islands of the Caribbean, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. It was a realm rich in wealth, particularly gold, silver, and precious gems, and the map locates the fortified ports Spain built along the coast, the routes followed by the treasure-laden galleons, and the site of numerous shipwrecks. The map itself is a composite, based on charts designed circa 1720 by cartographer Herman Moll, and it has a decorative title cartouche, compass rose, and vignettes of sailing ships. The coverage area extends from the Isthmus of Panama to the Great Lakes and Newfoundland, including present-day Texas, Louisiana, Florida, the Great Lakes area, Cuba, Georgia, Virginia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and more. On the reverse side of the map there is a detailed, cut-away view of a Spanish galleon, along with illustrations of cannons, navigational aids, and some of the booty carried home by these ships.
