Signed Original HARTWELL WYSE PRIEST Etching

Description: “DEEP RIVER” SIGNED ORIGINAL ETCHING BY CANADIAN / AMERICAN ARTIST AND PRINTMAKER HARTWELL WYSE PRIEST, NAWPS (1901-2004) This etching is signed in pencil by the artist below the image in the margin lower right: Hartwell Wyse Priest. The etching is titled in pencil below the image in the margin lower left: Deep River. The image size of the etching (plate mark) measures 10 1/8 x 5 15/16 inches. The etching is printed on wove paper with full margins, the sheet measuring 15 x 9 1/4 inches. Date created and edition size unknown. The etching comes archivally matted. The mat measures 16 x 20 inches. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There is evidence of very faint light toning to the sheet front (mat window open area), otherwise the etching is in very good condition, a crisp clean bright impression with no evidence of any damage to the image, and no creases or tears to the sheet. Hartwell Wyse Priest, painter and printmaker, was born in Bradford, Ontario. She studied art at Smith College, the Art Students League in New York with Hans Hofmann and in Paris at the Atelier with Andre Lhote. She became known primarily for her etchings and illustrations but also painted in oils and created a number of mural works. During her career, Hartwell was president of the Summit, New Jersey Art Association and was an instructor of graphics at the Virginia Art Institute. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. Hartwell resided in Summit, New Jersey and also lived part time in Pointe au Baril, Ontario.
