Description: Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938, written by R. A. Scotti, is a 279 page, 6 1/4 X 9 1/2 inch hardcover book published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston. The copyright date is 2003 and this is a third printing of the first edition: the copyright page states "First Edition" and the printing number line starts with "3." The author has written "For Arthur, who has his own '38 hurricane stories" and signed and dated (September 2003) the half-title page. The book is in very good plus condition in a very good plus unclipped dustjacket, with yellow boards, a gold spine, and white spine titles. Synopsis - The author provides a detailed account of the impact of the 1938 storm. From the publisher: "On September 21, 1938, the fastest hurricane on record caught the Northeast by surprise and left a wake of death and destruction across seven states. Traveling at record speeds, the storm raced up the Atlantic coast, reaching New York and New England ahead of hurricane warnings and striking with such intensity that seismographs in Alaska registered the impact. Winds clocked at 186 miles per hour stripped cars of their paint. Walls of water fifty feet high swept homes and entire families out to sea." Illustrated with a center section of black and white photos. Condition Details - The book has a square spine, a tight binding, and no marks, tears, or writing. The cover has just a hint of shelfwear, no soil or stains. The textblock edges are lightly toned, but clean. The dustjacket (in new, protective Brodart) has very light edgewear, no stains, chips, or tears. No unpleasant odors. I never use stock photos.
