The obverse of the coin depicts the profile of Nicholas II, facing left. To the left of the profile, from bottom to top, in a semicircle along the edging, there is an inscription: "B..NIKOLAI II IMPERATOR" ("BM" means "by God's grace"). To the right of the profile, also along the circumference along the edging, but from top to bottom there is an inscription: " ." On the reverse of the coin, in the central part, there is an image of the Small State Emblem of the Russian Empire, model 1883. On the coat of arms there is a double-headed eagle, crowned with two imperial crowns, above there is the same crown, but of a larger size, connected with the lower crowns by a waving ribbon of the St.Andrew's Order. The eagle holds the scepter with its right paw, and the orb with its left. On the chest there is the Moscow coat of arms: Saint George on horseback, striking a serpentine dragon with wings with a spear. The Moscow coat of arms is surrounded by the chain of the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called. On the raised wings of the eagle are the coats of arms of eight kingdoms (four on each wing). On the left are the coats of arms of the kingdoms: Kazan, Polish, Tauric Chersonesos, as well as the coats of arms of the great principalities united into one: Kiev, Vladimir and Novgorod. On the right, the coats of arms of the kingdoms: Astrakhan, Siberian, Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Finland. The eagle's tail is stylized. Under the hind leg of the horse George the Victorious there is the engraver's sign - "AG". Under the coat of arms, in a semicircle along the edging, the denomination and the year of minting are indicated: "50 KOPEEK 1897" (the number "50" is made larger).
