Description: SOCIAL CHESS - A COLLECTION OF SHORT AND BRILLIANT GAMES WITH HISTORICAL AND PRACTICAL ILLUSTRATIONS. Excellent condition for its age. The author is James Mason (* 1849 - +1905), an American chess master, journalist, and publicist who lived mostly in England. Born an orphan, Mason was adopted by an Irish family who lived in Killarney, but emigrated to the USA in 1862 after the Great Famine on the island of Ireland. Financially secure as an editor of the US daily newspaper "New York Herald", Mason began to intensify his chess knowledge and attracted attention in 1876 by winning the tournament at the Fourth USA Chess Congress in Philadelphia. The following year, he defeated the English chess master Henry Bird, who was in New York, 13:6 (!). Bird, deeply impressed, advised Mason to emigrate to England and play chess professionally there. Mason did indeed achieve some good tournament results in Europe (Vienna 1882 - third place, Nuremberg 1883 - third place, DSB Chess Congress Hamburg 1885 - second place) and was one of the eight best chess players in the world around 1885 according to his historical Elo rating. In Hastings 1895 - presumably the best tournament of all time - his compatriot Harry N. Pillsbury stole the show (he won ahead of Lasker), while Mason remained in the middle of the table with 9.5/18. Mason, who was not averse to alcohol, ended his career with a few chess books (including SOCIAL CHESS). Mason is remembered by posterity for several opening variations named after him, including... a) the Mason Variation in the King's Gambit Accepted (1. e4 e5 2. f4 ef4: 3. Nc3 Qh4+ 4. Ke2) b) the Mason Gambit in the Italian Game (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. d4 ed4: 6. 0-0 !?) with numerous pitfalls for Black c) the London System 1. d4 d5 2. Bf4 - which Mason popularized at tournaments in London 192 pages (174 pages + XVIII) with text explanations, some illustrations, anecdotes and 131 chess games annotated by Mason Of interest to chess researchers are the illustrations of some historical chess pieces ("chessmen"). The book is written entirely in English - games in descriptive notation HARDCOVERED EDITION WITH GOLDEN EMBOSSING ON THE BOOK COVER AND SPINe (including a chessboard decorated with officers) - see Photo
