Description: Spectacular large signed scroll painting depicting Tiger by Kishi Ryuzan Age:19th centuryYanagisawa Kien, originally Rikyō ( 1703- 1758) Yanagisawa Kien (1704–1758) was born as the son of Sone Hoko, who served as the chief retainer for Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu. In 1718, upon his coming-of-age ceremony, he was granted the Yanagisawa surname by his lord, Yoshisato. In 1727, he received a character from Yoshisato's name, changing his own to Rikyu, and began referring to himself in the Chinese style as Yanagisawa Rikyu. A man of many talents, he studied painting under Yoshida Shusetsu, also known as Eigenshō, a member of the Nagasaki School. His works are characterized by a dense and intense Chinese style. Kien served under two generations of lords, Yoshisato and Inobu, and was particularly valued by Inobu, who entrusted him with important responsibilities.
