Description: Ideal sphagnum for orchids and carnivorous plant mixes. This Peruvian sphagnum is sustainably harvested. We decompress larger bales for easier use and remove any significant grass, leaves, etc. Long fiber sphagnum helps aerate potting mixes. One pound is approximately 3 gallons, lightly compressed. Volume is hard to pin down with sphagnum; so the best way to know how much you are getting is to compare weight vs. price. This is classified as AA, slightly shorter length pieces than AAA (which is overkill for planting mix purposes). We use this moss at our Botanique Nursery, in Virginia, in orchid, Nepenthes, Cephalotus and Drosera media mixes. We have tested the pH and conductivity and found this Peruvian moss to be of excellent quality. Ships in a 10 inch cube box, lightly compressed, out of Virginia. The moss is shipped completely dry. It will expand some after wetting. Th pH tested at 5.27, perfect for carnivorous plants and orchids growing in acidic conditions. The gallon vinegar container (empty) is for size comparison purposed only! The bag shown is lightly compressed after we loosen tightly-packed bulk bales and examine the moss.
