The rules are clearly laid out and make sense. Players who organize their squads well usually defeat more careless opponents, and there is constant suspense as the battle unfolds and the opposing plans collide. My favorite rule is the one that rewards with victory points those squads that get their incapacitated soldiers off the map before the end of the game. This really helps the realism factor as soldiers try to help their injured comrades rather than abandon them on the field of battle. I've played man-to-man games that totally neglect this camaraderie side of combat, unlike Patrol! The simultaneous movement rules attract a lot of criticism nowadays, as modern games feature more reactive activation rules, but once you get over the unfamiliarity, the game moves quickly, particularly as the squads steadily are whittled down as there is less movement to plan for; the chaos of combat is well-represented by the simultaneous activation system. The only reason I don't give Patrol! a 10 is that the components are 1970s SPI bland, but this in no way hinders the fun factor; it admittedly lacks the eye candy that more modern games of this type have, but Patrol! works better as both game and simulation than those games do. The historical coverage of Patrol! extends from 1913 to the present. WWi, WWii, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East form the basis for the opposing Players' Orders of Battle. Minor conflicts like the Russian Civil War etc, are also represented.
