Description: Springtail Cultures Springtails (Folsomia candida) are microfauna that breakdown dead plants, leaves, organic waste, and mold. They are great cleaners for terrariums and vivariums. Our Springtail culture arrives in a soft soil, ready to seed your terrarium/vivarium. We ship in soft coconut coir soil to help protect Springtails from temperature swings and movement during transit. To use your culture, simply mix the inoculated soil directly into your substrate and keep hydrated. Our Temperate/Tropical Springtail culture will thrive in most terrarium/vivarium environments. Due to their extremely small size, it is difficult to count Springtails. Each order has about 2-4 oz of soil, containing a minimum of 30-50 Springtails. Additional details about our Springtails Our springtails have an unpigmented, slender body less than 3 mm (0.1 in) in length. The globular white eggs take about one week to hatch at 21 °C (70 °F) and three weeks to reach maturity. Development takes longer at lower temperatures. They may live for 110 to 240 days, depending on the temperature and food availability. Each may lay about a thousand eggs. Colonies will grow or decrease in number according to the amount of food available, among other conditions. Notes about shipping This species NOT intended for dry desert terrariums. Please consider weather conditions and request post office pickup when there are extreme temperatures. If you will not be home when your package arrives, contact the post office with your tracking number to have your package held for pick up.To avoid packages sitting on a truck or in the post office no shipments are processed on Fridays.
